Vision, objectives and result

BIMEET aims to broaden the BIM training agenda to support the European Union building energy efficiency agenda. This requires broad awareness and expertise in BIM practice across different asset types and across different roles in the industry. The aim of BIMEET-project is many-fold:

(a) pave the way to a fundamental step change in delivering systematic, measurable and effective energy efficient buildings through BIM training with a view to effectively address European energy and carbon reduction targets;
(b) promote a well-trained world leading generation of decision makers, practitioners, and blue collars in BIM for energy efficiency;
(c) establish a world-leading platform for BIM for energy efficiency training nurtured by an established community of interest.

BIMEET general aims translate into the following objectives (O1-O7), which guided all research and development activities during the BIMEET project. Results and findings are reported in deliverables and publications.

O1: Screen and synthesize past and ongoing European, as well as national, initiatives and projects with a focus on assembling evidence-based quantitative / measurable scenarios and use cases that demonstrate the role of BIM in achieving energy efficiency in buildings across the whole value chain. Results cover gaps identification in relation to skills and competencies involved in BIM training for energy efficiency prior to integration with following training models and strategies. Consultations and interviews have been used as a method to collect requirements and a portfolio of use-case has been created to understand existing BIM practices and determine existing limitations and gaps in BIM training.

O2: Benchmark existing Europe-wide BIM trainings across the building value chain (including lifecycle and supply chain), highlighting energy efficiency linkages, as well as qualification targets, delivery channels, skills, accreditation mechanisms, while highlighting training gaps and enhancement potential.

Results cover reviews on the training offered in the countries represented by the project partners to the supply chain across the construction life cycle. In particular it considers the role of apprenticeships and university courses as a vehicle to develop suitably trained construction professionals in this field. It also assesses the existing BIM training provision and associated certification offered by training organisations to determine whether this can provide the required skills and knowledge.

Further the results cover analysis and identification of roles and skills involved in BIM training for energy efficiency prior to integration with following training models and strategies. Social media analysis have been used alongside standards, use-cases, interviews and scientific publications as a method to collect roles and skills in order to inform future BIM practices and promote improved BIM training and education.

O3: Harmonize energy related BIM qualification and skills frameworks available across Europe with a view of reaching a global consensus through our BIM for energy efficiency expert panel. The focus is on setting up a mutual recognition scheme of qualifications and certifications among different Member States supported by an effective strategy to ensure that qualification and training schemes are sustained after the end of the project.

The European Qualifications Framework is a common European reference framework whose purpose is to make qualifications more readable and understandable across different countries and systems1. The framework includes eight reference levels, which are defined in terms of learning outcomes.

Results cover first draft of the learning outcomes for training courses that would provide the required skills and knowledge for the selected roles in design, building and maintenance processes in order to effectively utilize building information modelling for energy-efficient buildings. 6-8 specified groups of learning outcomes for the each selected main category role is defined. Each of the groups consists of 4-14 learning outcomes that clarify and supplement the required qualifications. The specific order is intended to support in course planning phases as most training courses are based on modular structure.

Further analyses with help of existing trainings from 4 partner countries evaluated Knowledge, Skills and Competencies related to the BIMEET qualification LO framework. Also 2 new training schemes were developed based on lessons learnt from the evaluation: ‘BIM for Energy efficiency of buildings’ and ‘BIM for Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)’.

O4: Map identified skills, qualifications, and accreditation into a BIM for energy efficiency overlay with a total lifecycle and supply chain (including blue collar) perspective. There are country specific delivery and process variations that will be considered to ensure successful take-up of the BIMEET training program at a national level.

Results cover a development towards labelling sceme based on BIMEET LO framework. The following stages were addressed in the analysis: Definition of the label, The label assessment commission, The training labelling process, The constituent elements of the application, Training assessment criteria for awarding the label and The test on training courses.

O5: Adapt the BIM4VET platform to provide a robust computer-based online and open-access environment for BIMEET. The resulting BIMEET platform is available on-line on an open-access mode, nurtured by an established community of interest underpinned by an adapted business model.

Results cover the new platform which is structured around five major components: A database including BIM/EE training data, a Map server, a recommender engine and a tangible tabletop device. The BIMEET application is basically an interactive map, relying on a natural user interface to explore data about a.) the potential target audience for a given area and b.) the available trainings in the same region. The general idea is to provide training institutions with information required for identifying market needs and consequently improving the consistency of the training offer. Dedicated validation of the BIMEET tangible application feedback was promising. The application seems to be easy to use, very enjoyable, and well adapted to support job-related tasks.

O6: Establish a governance, policy, and regulatory framework as well as adapted business models to ensure the long-term sustainability of the proposed BIMEET training agenda. O7: Disseminate within and beyond Europe the resulting BIMEET platform and training program. Experts and teachers, professionals and students reached, an estimation of total number of attendees and participation: 2212 (6105 by the end of year 2020). This estimation does not include number of persons reached via www-pages or BIMEET social media channels. Further, the Energy BIM community have 76 registered users in the Energy BIM platform, connected to BIMEET project.

Different new results provided by BIMEET research are valorised in scientific articles. The audience of scientific articles give a clear quantitative feedback, which is expressed by views and references. For example, the article “Optimizing Energy Efficiency in Operating Built Environment Assets through Building Information Modelling: A Case Study”, at Energies; Basel Vol. 10, Iss. 8, (2017): 1167, by Ioan Petri, Sylvain Kubicki, Yacine Rezgui, Annie Guerriero and Haijiang Li has already 7018 views, 2116 downloads and 24 citations (May 2020).
